Oral Sex & Disease

Many of our patients are unaware about the risk of transmission of disease through oral sex.  Oral sex can transmit many of the same diseases associated with other types of sex.  These diseases include: HIV, Herpes, Genital Warts, Hepatitis, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Yeast Infections and others.  You get the idea.

The transmission of infection through oral sex can be transmitted in either an oral to genital or genital to oral direction.  Neither the receiver, nor giver, of oral sex is safe from the transmission of disease.  It has been shown, however, that for some of these diseases the risk of transmission through oral contact is lower than through other types of sex.

Safe oral sex should include the use of a condom or dental dam to prevent the transmission of HIV and many other sexually transmitted diseases but be aware that microscopic analysis of rubber shows it is porous; it can still allow penetration of other smaller, infectious micro-organisms. Sorry.
